Sunday nap, By Richard Lewis

A former church member Richard tells stories like you wouldn't believe. I once heard him talking about stories and how he would ask one of his grandkids to give him 3 names or 3 things.
With that he would use the 3 names or things given to him and make up a story around them.

So I asked him to do one for me and I gave him Chance my pig, Zoey my dog and God. This is what he wrote and sent to me in like an hour. Great story

By Richard Lewis.

In addition to writing devotionals I have occasionally written Christian fiction short stories, like this example

.The story below was written a few years ago for my good church pals Lanie and Ron Blackmon.

Lanie has a little dog named Zoey

and she used to have a pig named Chance

so that is where the characters were drawn from for this story. God has a special relationship with animals and I tried to express that in this short tale.Zoey, the little dog who found her voice

Once upon a time there was a dog named Zoey, a pig named Chance and their little girl owner was Lanie

.Lanie was taking a nap on a Sunday afternoon and when she woke up from her nap she decided to take Zoey out for a walk. They were walking along and Lanie was trying to turn right and Zoey pulled on the leash and obviously wanted to turn left and then Lanie heard a voice that said, “Let’s go this way”. Lanie looked around to see where the voice came from but there was nobody there. She looked at Zoey and what happened next was very strange. Zoey’s mouth moved and Lanie heard the voice again, “Let’s go this way”. Lanie picked up Zoey and held her up close to her face and asked her what this was all about.

Zoey answered, “Why is it such a big deal, of course, animals can talk”. It seemed that once Zoey got started talking Lanie could not get her to stop. Zoey told Lanie about how much God loved her and then Zoey told her a secret that most people don’t know. The secret is that God talks to the animals just like He talks to people. Lanie was amazed. Zoey explained that God told the animals when they needed to go into the ark two by two so they could be saved. How else would they have known to show up at the ark? How else to birds know when it is time for them to head North and South just like clockwork. How else do the butterflies know when they need to migrate? God tells them when it is time to go.

Zoey told Lanie about lots of other things that really explained how much God loved the people of the world and how much His heart was broken by people who would not listen. God sends brilliant rainbows and pretty colored sunrise and sunsets. He paints the sky with love letters of color and yet man is often too busy to listen. It seemed like they had walked and talked for hours and then Lanie heard a faraway voice calling her. The voice got louder and louder and soon it got darker and darker outside.

The door to her bedroom opened, daylight streamed in and someone told her it was time for dinner. Lanie rubbed her sleepy eyes and realized that although it has seemed so real it had all been just a dream – one of those dreams that you have on a lazy Sunday afternoon when thoughts about God are rolling around in your head from being at church. Zoey and Chance lay resting asleep near her head. Lanie got up and went down to dinner. It had all been a dream and yet it had been so real.

It had warmed her heart to know that God loved her and she had decided, dream or not, she was going to try to listen more carefully for God’s still small voice in her life. She spoke to Zoey a few times in the afternoon and evening but Zoey just looked back at her saying nothing. Soon it was time to go to bed. Lanie and her pets began to drift off. Zoey and Chance were snuggled up really close to her as she wished them a good night. Then out of the darkness she heard a squeaky little pig voice say, “Good night”.

The End

RIP Chance Jan 2016

I still have Zoey who is 4 years old now
